Left untreated, dermatitis can lead to psychological issues and severe secondary illness
Dermatitis is a skin conditions that also leads to psychological stress for the person afflicted. Moreover, if left untreated, dermatitis can lead to severe and ever-expanding skin problems. That itchy feeling grows, and constant scratching damages the protective layers of the skin. Bacteria then enter the skin, causing infection. Viral infections are also possible, some simply annoying and some actually dangerous, e.g. Eczema herpeticatum. In general, it’s clear that treating dermatitis sooner rather than later is the right course of action. This is the way to avoid dermatitis becoming worse and relatedly to maintain a good quality of life.
Why is the treatment of dermatitis so important?

What is the actual cause of dermatitis?
Dermatitis is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition. Over the past 60 year, the prevalence of this skin problem has increased significantly – by four to six times! Currently between 5% and 20% of children suffer with dermatitis (for more information about dermatitis in children and infants, please see our “Childhood Dermatitis” page), as well as 1% to 3% of adults. The progression of the skin condition can differ greatly from person to person, from very mild cases to serious cases that affect larger areas of the body. Symptoms include redness and peeling, which sometimes progresses to weeping forms of eczema with a severe itchiness. This skin disease becomes worse in stages that differ among people, though the types of symptoms experienced often relate to age. The cause of dermatitis is two-sided: First, some have a predisposition for developing the condition, and second, an autoimmune reaction may arise that involves chronic inflammatory allergy symptoms. Defects in the skin caused by dermatitis can hinder the function of the skin as a barrier to substances that may cause an allergic reaction. Additionally, it becomes more easy for bacteria to enter the body through damaged skin. They produce so-called exotoxins that are poisonous – this in turn makes the inflammatory reaction even worse. The actual cause of the auto-immune reaction remains unclear to this day. Nonetheless, the deciding factor in whether or not dermatitis becomes more severe and chronic is the integrity of the skin, wherein healthy skin is more able to prevent the entry of allergens and bacteria.

Why do I have dermatitis now?
Some specific triggers, including stress, can lead to the development of dermatitis or make existing cases of dermatitis more severe. This can trigger intense itching and skin redness, which can quickly develop into eczema. Among the factors that lead to dermatitis include chemicals in cosmetics and skincare products, cleaning products and foods as well as medications like antibiotics, contraceptives and pain relievers. Other possible causes include sunburn, excess sweating, alcohol or nicotine consumption, and of course psychological stress. Anyone who suffers with dermatitis should limit or eliminate these factors to the extent possible.
What can I proactively do about dermatitis?
Aside from starting to treat this skin conditions as soon as possible, it is also important to eliminate the triggering factors that might lead to one developing dermatitis. Here, the diet can play a significant role in the occurrence of dermatitis. Moreover, the use of skincare products with artificial ingredients can also irritate the skin (you can read more about this on our “Proper Skincare” page). To address acute skin problems, you should use our proven mineral mask over a period of at least two weeks.
The dual-effectiveness of our mineral masks
First, the mineral mask frees even the deeper layers of the skin from accumulated toxic substances (deep cleansing). This is a result of increased circulation and the stimulation of the metabolism of the skin in the area being treated. Second, the inflammation and bacteria that lead to irritation, and eczema in more serious cases, is addressed in a targeted way. Additionally, the mineral masks both normalise and optimise the skin’s metabolic processes. Properly functioning metabolism helps the skin to remain in balance over the long term while maintaining its resilience.
This is how the mineral mask works against dermatitis
The mineral mask is a wet and creamy mask that is normally applied to the face, though it can actually be used for any area of the skin in need of treatment. The primary ingredient in the mineral mask is Gossendorf natural fango, which is only found in a formerly volcanic region of Styria, a province in the south-east of Austria. The location where this clay is found is a protected area, and it is handled with utmost care throughout processing. In addition, the mineral mask contains special plant essences. After gently washing, a thin layer of the mineral mask is applied to the skin and allowed to work for about 20 minutes, then it is rinsed off with lukewarm water. For a more detailed description of how to use Bentomed, please see the package insert.
1. Deep-down skin cleaning (freeing the skin of accumulated toxins)
The mineral-rich natural fango clay contained in the mineral masks pulls accumulating toxins from the skin like a sponge. The metabolism of the skin is stimulated by increasing local circulation, meaning that waste product and toxins present in the deeper layers of the skin is transported to the surface and removed. This deep skin cleansing forms the foundation of the treatment. The effectiveness is noticeable from the very start as the skin looks and feels both more clean and more soft. Some may notice that the skin initially seems more dry, but this is actually a normal and desirable effect of the mineral mask treatment.
2. Fighting inflammation and preventing the development of eczema
The natural fango clay that the mineral masks contain works to regulate the functioning of the skin. It normalises the protective barrier of the skin and prevents fine cracks from forming, which can allow the entry of bacteria. In this way, the eczema that so commonly develops along with the related skin irritation can effectively be prevented. This in turn frees up the skin for the absorption of essential minerals and helpful enzymes that are also contained in the mineral masks. These fight any inflammation that is present, and they have been shown to neutralise the enterotoxins from bacteria already present in the skin. The sulphur contained in our natural fango is of crucial importance as it functions as a natural way to rid the body of inflammation and toxin. These effects can be seen in the way the mineral masks sometimes cause a crust to slowly form over areas of skin affected by eczema – healthy skin cells are encouraged to grow underneath. After some time, the crust falls off revealing the new skin tissue.
3. Normalising skin metabolism and providing nourishing plant essences
The minerals and trace elements found in the mineral masks bring about a lasting regulation of the metabolism of the skin. When the skin is functioning properly, it can more fully expel unhealthy substances from the body, both organic and inorganic. In addition, the mineral masks also contain nurturing plant oil essences that sooth the skin and encourage proper hydration.
Our recommendation for dermatitis
A mineral mask is to be applied to affected areas of skin, for example the face or the neck as well the inside of the elbows or knees or any other part of the body. For use on the scalp, we recommend thinning the mineral mask with a small amount of water before massaging it into the skin. We recommend using the mineral mask once per day, ideally in the evening, over a period of two weeks. For more stubborn cases, we recommend pausing for a week and then repeating the two week treatment. TIP: For extended use, or if a large area of skin is in need of care, order the reduced-price double package and enjoy free delivery at the same time. You’ll find detailed instructions for use in the package insert.
